Recurring Theme

Has it ever happened, that you hear a word or expression for the first time and then all of a sudden, it keeps popping up everywhere?  It's been happening quite a bit, to me, lately. But one theme in particular has been showing up on Facebook, YouTube, audiobooks and who knows where else.

It's this: "We believe what we tell ourselves".

I'm not sure why this seems to have struck a chord with me. Perhaps, it's this self-improvement road that I'm on. I don't know about you, but there's always talk going on in my head and maybe, for too long, that voice was telling me lies and I believed it.  Nowadays, I correct that voice and try to put it on the right track but sometimes that other one still creeps in and I have to remind myself that it's wrong and I need to be listening to the right voice.

I would like to share the different versions of this theme that have been finding me in the last couple of months. For me, this was a reminder of all the negative things that I felt about myself and that were holding me back from being the person that I want to be, that I'm meant to be but we can also put it into the context of racism, social status, homophobia, gender equality, religious freedom and so many more things.  It's so easy to convince ourselves of lies and truths, positive and negative thoughts. The most difficult part is making sure that what we believe, is the right thing. So...

from Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind
Chapter 36
"Wizard's First Rule!  People are stupid!  Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything.  Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true or because they are afraid it might be true.  People's heads are full of knowledge, facts and beliefs and most of it is false, yet they think it all true.  People are stupid!  They can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and a truth and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."

"You'll learn to identify 'brules' that are holding you back from growth. A 'brule' is a bullsh*it rule, one that isn't true but is generally believed to be true."
Vishen Lakhiani, founder of Mindvalley
