Spring Holiday in Wales

We picked the worst time of the year to take a holiday. The weather was ugly in many places but it was truly vile in the UK.  Nonetheless, we’d been meaning to go to Wales and an opportunity came up when Mauri had to go to York and Manchester for work so Alex and I followed and then took a few days to drive through some of Wales.  We made our way south and spent a couple of nights around Brecon Beacons National Park. We stayed in a lovely B&B called the Pen-y-Bryn in Llangorse for a couple of nights and just drove around, trying to take in as much as possible from the comfort and heating of our car. The scenery was breathtaking, with rolling hills, chilly desert like plains, mountains and plenty of winding roads(Mauri’s favourite). We sometimes, unwillingly, got out of the car to take some photos and we even took a ride on a steam train at the Brecon Mountain Railway Co. in Merthyr Tydfil.  Our next stop was Cardiff and we decided to go on another scenic drive via Swansea where we had a really good Fish & Chips lunch.  I, who loves to try traditional foods, really wanted to try faggots(a meat patty of sort made with pork offal and other unwanted bits) but, alas, never did. Maybe next time! I did have plenty of Welsh cakes which I would like to reproduce someday. Cardiff was very chilly and eventhough it was a school holiday, it was deserted due to the unseasonal weather.  We walked around Cardiff Bay area, enjoyed the mix of old and new architecture and took part in our Doctor Who Experience. We would love to visit Wales again one day, at a time of year when the temperature is a bit more reasonable. Our last stop before heading East to visit friends was Cheltenham for the night and The Red Lion in Chipping Campden for dinner. We’d eaten there on a few occasions and were never disappointed with the food or the service. This time was just as good, even though it was under new ownership, and we had the privilege of meeting a lovely couple from the U.S. with whom we chatted all evening. A wonderful end to a lovely holiday!
